With the grown popularity in Medieval themed Halloween costumes, like the interest in Irish history, putting the two together with a mix of historical facts and mythology can produce some amazing Halloween costume ideas for Men, Women and Children. With the clothing worn during this era, finding amazing costumes should be easy.

Ireland is so steeped in cultural history that the Medieval era is often over looked. All over Europe, Medieval fashion was different in styles and designs, but the two main styles really would have been “ The Rich and The Poor.” During Medieval times in Ireland, the clothing worn comprised of two main items, the Leine and The Brat.

The Leine

A smock like garment known as a Leine, could be either sleeveless or with fitted sleeves that fell beautifully above the ankles. The neckline, cuffs and hemline usually had embroidered designs, and the arms, neck and chest had a looser fit which would allow workers to slip the garment down to the waste during a hot day. The longer the length, the higher your social status was seen.

The Brat

The Brat was a rectangular cloak mostly made from wool and was worn like a shawl. A pin would be used to fasten it at the neck or shoulder. It was a large and roomy garment that when moved about could be normally dyed the one color with a border of another color and like the Leine the length dictated a higher social status.

The textile used to make garments changed with social class. With most of the population been of lower class, usually used linen or wool while silk and satin, having to be imported, could only be afforded by the rich.

At the time, most of the Irish clothing were brightly colored, patterned or striped. While these were the clothes usually attributed with the people of the country, the other clothing around the country would also have been of Irish soldiers and English Knights.

In the country side, where the Irish ancient Brehon law still ruled, Irish Kings paraded around in their greatest fashion at the time, and monks wandered the countryside it their brown colored robes and hoods.

All this clothing of this Medieval Irish era makes way for some unique quality Halloween and fancy dress party ideas.
